- Automation of procurement processes results in lower cost of sales
Today, Amazon.com is the place to find anything you want to buy online including millions of books, CDs, videos, DVDs, toys and games, and electronics. 29 million people in more than 160 countries have made Amazon.com the leading online shopping site.
The Challenge
Amazon.com and T-Mobile wanted to give customers the ability to purchase a phone and select a customized rate plan from Amazon's Web site. The phone would then be automatically activated using T-Mobile's billing and provisioning systems. Finally, a fully functional phone would be delivered to the customer.
The Solution
The online cell phone procurement system was designed using a Java-based framework Logicalis developers had created called WATSON. The WATSON system allows the T-Mobile sales force to activate phones using a Web-based client. The new customized application ties into T-Mobile's billing and rate plan system and sends the critical information to Amazon. The necessary credit checks and background billing data is invisible to the consumer. Security is built into the system. Within minutes, the phone is fully activated and ready to send and receive calls.
The Bottom Line
Amazon.com customers are now able to automatically and securely purchase a phone on-line and select a customized T-Mobile rate plan from the Amazon.com web site.
