SPEEA is an organization representing 24,500 engineers, technical workers and other professional employees at The Boeing Company. SPEEA specializes in collective bargaining, contract enforcement, special services and communications, and legislative activity in the interest of Boeing workers.
The Challenge
SPEEA was running its mission critical member database application on an HP e3000 server using the MPE/ix operating system with custom-developed MPE applications. SPEEA determined that in order to offer its members enhanced services, they would need to improve the way they used the member data provided to them by Boeing. The system had to be easily updated, but retain continuity in the records. Additionally, the data was highly sensitive, therefore security was a key requirement. SPEEA was looking for expertise in migrations as well as database access, availability and security.
The Solution
In looking at SPEEA's current situation, Logicalis' assessment team concluded that the MPE/ix operating system didn't offer the flexibility that SPEEA was looking for in a solution. As a result, Logicalis was tasked with migrating SPEEA's infrastructure from a HP e3000 server to a new server platform. Logicalis and SPEEA decided that in order to deliver the features desired, IP-based applications offered the best option for flexibility and access from multiple platforms.
The Bottom Line
Logicalis designed and developed an enhanced IP- based database application for SPEEA. The system supports users with IE 4.0+ browsers running on Windows, Mac, and UNIX operating systems. Technologies used in the new solution include HTML, JavaScript, ASP, COM, and SQL Server. Based on the new environment, SPEEA members are realizing improved service and support. More importantly, SPEEA has a platform and database application that will allow for growth and the ability to add new functionality as needed.
